Third-gen Honda Jazz debuts; first details and pictures

honda-fit-hybrid--3

Lo and behold, everyone, this is the hotly awaited third-generation 2014 Honda Jazz (or Fit in Japan and the US). It heralds a brand new design direction for the Japanese automaker, and is the Jazz’s biggest stylistic departure yet since the original model debuted in 2001. There are huge gains in efficiency too, as first details of the Jazz Hybrid are revealed.

The first-generation Jazz was a masterclass in interior packaging (it debuted the ingenious UltraSeats), but it did so at the expense of exterior design harmony. The egg-shaped design was carried over in a more refined form for the second-generation Jazz, which is now Honda Malaysia’s biggest-selling model in Jazz 1.5 Petrol and Jazz Hybrid forms.

This all-new model eschews much of its predecessors’ styling traits to debut Honda’s new design language dubbed Exciting H Design. The basic shape remains but it has taken a much more aggressive approach, both at the front and rear. The sides too possess dramatic lines and deep creases to appear more sophisticated than ever before.

There’s a stark departure on the inside too. Simplification is the chosen direction here, with most dashboard buttons replaced by touch-based controls. There’s a large touchscreen panel that sits flush on the dashboard where the audio controls used to be, with an intuitive smartphone-like interface. The air-con controls are all new too, now using touch pads.

The dashboard layout follows much of what was shown in the Honda Urban SUV Concept earlier this year, which previews a new Jazz-based crossover that will take on the Nissan Juke and Ford EcoSport, as well as the upcoming Volkswagen Taigun. Production of the future SUV will follow that of the new Jazz, slated to be towards the end of this year or early 2014.

Changes are abound on the hardware front as well, as we now have details of the new Jazz Hybrid model. Headlining figure is its claimed fuel consumption figure of 36.4 km per litre, a 35% improvement over the current model and the best of all hybrid vehicles in Japan (not counting plug-in hybrids – the Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid does 70.4 km/L).

honda-fit-hybrid-7

It’s the first model to be equipped with the SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive (i-DCD) system, Honda’s new lightweight and compact one-motor hybrid technology for small vehicles that replaces the current IMA hybrid system. Part of the Earth Dreams Technology collective, it utilises a new engine, gearbox, built-in high-output electric motor and lithium-ion battery.

It can now run in full EV mode now, making the new model a full hybrid. The engine in question is a four-cylinder 1.5 litre Atkinson cycle motor that is paired to a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. That and the new electric motor, IPU (intelligent power unit), electric servo brake system and a fully-electric compressor all work together to achieve the impressive efficiency figures.

So there you go. Brand new looks inside and out, with a thoroughly reworked drivetrain package featuring various new innovations. You can’t say Honda didn’t try hard with the new Jazz now, can you? Tell us what you think of the third-generation Honda Jazz below.

It’s not a clean design, but I think the front and side profiles are elegant, yet muscly enough. The rear profile , however, is quite hard for me to swallow, it’s too avanza-ish.

No doubt that the original jazz was a packaging miracle. However even the current jazz ( and the last 2 generations of all CKD Honda here) have been thin on refinement, specifically cruising noise from the lack of sound deadening ( the horrible OE Eagle NCT 5 didn’t help). What’s more glaring is the blatant lack of safety gear….our 2005 accord is missing bumper reinforcement bars.

The gap between the Koreans and Honda are far apart…. As in the Koreans being far ahead.

I just had a go with the Cerato 2.0, and when compared to the current civic, I can’t see how the civic 2.0 is 12k more…..the cerato interior build and appointments is far ahead that of the civic, it even drives better and have better NVH.

I’ve rode Sonata, Elantra, Cerato, Forte, i30, … man they all feel cheap and plastic … it’s almost like Proton/Perodua rebadged with Korean brand. The interior finishing are poor, they man have the looks and specs, but not reliable. Go ahead with your Korean brand all you want if you enjoy laugh at.

You must be one hard selling Japanese car sales man that got your sales affected by the Korean cars invasion. Look at it this way, if the interior of Korean cars you mentioned are as cheap as you said it is, at least give them credit for trying. Whereas the Japanese car makers aren’t even trying and continue to exploit their fans with old tech and ugly designs and cheapo materials. But then again, because the existence of silly brand loyalist like you, they don’t need to, right? Everything the Jap car makers produce is the best in your eyes and in your eyes only!!!

  • From the pictures, it looks rather good in my opinion, not as great as a Rio or a 208, but certainly a wee better than the current one. If only it comes with a bigger wheels than I can even call it cute! But I need a crowbar to ply those hideous extra tail lamps on the back window, ruins almost everything. The interior, It looks simpler, thou less funky, than the outgoing model, very clean IMO.

Honestly, I’ll just give it a ‘not bad’ but the hybrid’s power train really surprise. Dual Clutch 7 speeder, not sure about reliability, but it’s been quite rare recently that a Japanese manufacturer move forward with their power train development. Honestly Bravo to that Honda!

I think I will need some time to digest the exterior design. It has lines everywhere, but less subtle compared to Mazda’s philosophy

I wonder if they overdid the front air dams? I hope it doesn’t turn out like Myvi Extreme, where a narrow car get aggressive front and rear bumpers, making it toyish looking

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
      • Initially I thought so too, But than PaulTan posted pics of a silver car and that caught my attention, this car is kinda color dependent, the blue car doesn’t do the appearance much justice. As far as too much lines, purely personal, it’s much better than Hyundai’s Fluidic design purely from the fact that car has more edges than curves, giving a distinctive Japanese ‘Gundam’ look. the only thing I absolutely dislike is that volvo vertical lamps on the rear window. They look fake, probably is, and just ruin the rear.

It reminds me of a more aggressive looking ‘chibi'(small or something) City in my opinion. Do I like it? in certain angle such as IMG-188370, showing a higher spec silver Fit Hybrid in 3/4 view, it does look good, almost like the Euro Civic Type R. But some (IMG 330, blue car) dosen’t.

          • The dashboard looks typical Honda, looks cheap but pretty robust. Design to last for decades, still feels cheap thou. This is a small hatchback and honestly, judging by the pics, even the cheapest version(no audio system, steering controls)gets the touch AC vents. And hybrids gets a centre speedo with 2 screens flanking it a la MP4-12C/458/Mazda 3. Due to the omission of buttons the centre console looks devoid of function. Just like today’s smartphones. So little function, I disagree.

Not bad. Sounds like Honda is listening to their engineers more just like the 90s rather than the past 14 years of following the accountants decisions. But these are pre production models right? Not the offical version, which of course has yet to be launched.

A DSG for hybrid Fit??? Even the 9G Accord only gets CVT (and 6 speed auto for North America). This is quite radical for Honda, and quite unexpected in this class. And the lack of buttons is un-Honda like. All these rather major changes, probably means it was designed in Japan rather than US.

The rear lights are a bit out of my taste though. I would prefer the looks of the US Yaris (don’t try to mention the China one). Anyway, it should be another great car from Honda.

    3. even at ‘this’ price, will it carry the same features as Japan did?

These are famous questions for CBU car in M’sia that always end up unfavorably.

Hmmm, I’m a pretty big fan of the current Jazz, and I’m not entirely liking what I see.

Exterior is a little bit overwrought. I don’t like the front grille; I think it could be a bit simpler. The surfacing on the sides could be done more elegantly; it looks chiselled, rather than sculpted. Not quite sure about the Volvo-esque rear taillights either, although they do look to be full-height ones, so that’s nice. And what’s with the “holes” in the rear bumper? There’s nothing to vent and they don’t seem to have any aerodynamic benefit, so why are they there? It just makes the rear look bulky and unsophisticated.

Interior doesn’t look too bad (although, again, there seems to be too much going on), but my god are touch controls a bad idea, especially in a car. They never seem to work, unless you press them accidentally. Also, when you’re driving you’re constantly relying on muscle memory to manipulate the controls, which you can’t do here. Having to look down to press buttons that aren’t guaranteed to work all the time is a huge safety hazard. Hopefully the models with manual air-conditioning that we are inevitably going to get have actual buttons.

In short, based solely on pictures, I’m a little disappointed. Instead of simply modernising the design of the current car, they’ve just gone and thrown more unnecessary fluff at it than they can shake a stick at. That’s a shame.

    • Thanks Frenzyaustin for sharing this early on. It’s interesting they’ve paired the electric motor with the 1.5 instead of going full efficiency with the 1.3. But What I really like, and most likely not coming to Malaysia, is the 1.5 RS with the 6-speed manual. I believe, even in my City, that a VTEC/I-VTEC must go with a manual to take full advantage of the rev-happy nature, espacially now this is DOCH, thee the ear-straining SOCH of my City(well I say mine but…..). Seeing at how this has a ‘certain Volkswagen’ benchmarked, I’am really kin to see it in metal. And of course, a new Honda City that maay arrive, probably next year.

Certainly an improvement in specs over the previous. as for looks? I’ll say they are ttrting something different this time.

No comment on the drivetrain as all the compatitors is now way beyond on performance n frugality. Honda like losing the magic on design, sharing the same face across all modes for such a long time doesn’t seems good (since odyssey about 10 yrs ago). Well… looks is on subjective side

yup with a battery prone to failure.. even though with higher capacity now (which means more expensive than before) but what for, if it is more prone to failure?

i think one day honda battery will be easily available in kedai runcit. coz got to replace every few thousands km.. like a remote control car battery.. hahahahahaha

at least toyota has got a battery that will last 400,000 km milage (proven previously.. )

I do not listen to any salesman I happen to OWN a PRIUS 1.8, a prius C and a lexus CT200h. I went with HSD because Honda’s IMA is crap. Honda salesman even said so but they try to say that their system is cheaper to maintain and so on. They themselves admit it. Pros and cons? R u saying that IMA is betther than HSD? if so why is Honda CHANGING their system NOW? Facts are facts. TOYOTA was first to market with ATKINSON CYCLE ENGINE AND TWO ELECTRIC MOTORS. EVERYONE ELSE IS A COPY CAT.

    • frenzyaustin on Jul 20, 2013 at 1:07 pm

But actallu, Honda IMA is really much easier to maintain due to the little difference compare with conventional car. HSD is much more efficient but much more complex compare with IMA.

      • stupid calcutta on Jul 21, 2013 at 12:46 am

bro, what good does IMA have? unreliable battery pack that is now cheaper to replace (now everybody can replace battery pack), engine-off for a couple of seconds with aircond turned off to imitate a full hybrid (how much fuel savings can you get from that?!)

whereas in toyota hsd, the system has proven itself to lasts for the last 3 generations, with over 400,000km milage clocked.. remind u, im not a salesman here. im the owner of a prius.. and im proud of prius..

unlike IMA, so-called hybrid wanna be which can even save enough fuel during traffic jam with battery pack prone to failure here and there (im thinking of a potong over here), what else do you have to say?

this 1.5L atkinson cycle with higher capacity battery is just a copy-cat of toyota’s system.. probably a higher capacity battery with higher possibility of failure..

bro,im another driver of a prius..

HSD need not any maintenance. even tho the design is complex, it has proven to be reliable, no additional maintenance, plus..

the battery lasts over 400,000km (proven fact!)

sadly i cant say the same for honda IMA batteries.. a known fact that is prone to failure.. now u say easier to maintain? go replace your battery every thousands of km la bro..

now they come up with a copycat atkinson cycle engine with higher battery capacity? i think higher battery capacity with higher possibility to go fail.. haha
